Dsico’s Restless Leg Syndrome ep: mini-interview & review

Dsico, aka Dsico that no-talent hack, aka Luke Collison has put out a new EP called <a href=”http://lukedsico.bandcamp.com/”>Restless Leg Syndrome</a>. According to the press release it was written in Feb. of this year. It’s four tracks of dancy pop/rock with a melancholy twist! More subjective opinion later.

<a href=”http://www.sunnybreaks.org/2008/06/03/in-the-dark-of-the-beaches/”>Back in June last year</a> I mentioned his last album in a blog post here and was a little chuffed to get a comment from Dsico himself. This time I tried asking for a mini email interview. Here ’tis:

> – You said the Touch Me (not like that) cover was tiles in
> a Stockholm train station. How about the Restless Leg
> Syndrome cover?

Yeah, i’ve got a slight obsession with photos of tiled walls. particularly grotty ones in train stations. I got a bunch of great tile photos in Hong Kong a few weeks ago, but these are from a underpass walkway right near work, near the Tower of London.

> – Was the ‘write an album in a month’ idea related

> to the NaNoWriMo write a novel in a month thing?

I think its related to the Novel one. I ran across it a few years ago RPM Challenge they call it. its all organised, I dont’ really participate in that side of it, just used it for inspiration.

> – What instrument do you write the tunes on – is it

> different every time?

Lately I”ve been starting with an Acoustic Guitar mainly but that changes all the time. sometimes it will eb a synth line or a bassline or keyboards.

> – The the songs have fuzz on the guitar. What fuzz pedal

> did you use?  or, do you record direct into the computer

> and add effects on the computer?

A lot of those songs I was running the guitar, Telecaster, through a Chunk Systems “Brown Dog” which is actually intended for Bass guitar. its a Gated Bass Fuzz but I use it quite a bit on guitar lately.

> – Is London a better place to be making music than Sydney,

> or is that just where the dayjob took you?

Much the same I think. I was dragged over here with the day job, so brough over most of my gear. the first few year or so I didn’t do a lot of music here though. as I think there was too much to explore. Now i’m getting back into it more.

> – Is anything real really gonna happen in Copenhagen this

> week or what?

seriously I do not know.. I would be surprised if anything shattering actually comes to pass. I’m ecpecting the usual disappointment.

I guess we can assume that these were the best four tracks from the rest of an album that got thrown back into the sea til it’s grown a bit more, but when I listen to the Restless Leg Syndrome ep alongside Touch Me (not like that) I can hear a progression.

As mentioned last year, I felt like I could pick out the influences on Touch Me pretty easily — there was a bit of The Cure, The Church in there among other things, but RLS is more its own thing.

Another thing I like about this is the pay format. I don’t know if many other artists are using systems like this, but from what I can see it looks a lot better than iTunes and things like that. I d/loaded the four songs for 0$ first to see if it was any good. Then after a listen went back and  sent off a bit of dosh for it. I do know that radiohead did something like this, but radiohead can suck my dick — it was just a PR angle for them, whereas for artists who aren’t signed to label, it can be a realistic way of getting music distributed.

I’m sure it sounds like a sleight but sometimes I think of Dsico’s non-mash-up stuff as being like the _Plan 9 From Outer Space_ of music. Not that it’s a laughable farce, but when I saw Plan 9 I thought Hey Wow, if this guy (Ed Wood) is doing this, then so could I. There isn’t layers of production obscuring Dsico’s music, same with the person and that can only be a good thing.
