Mucking around with the Opera 7 (preview 1) for Linux at the moment. It seems a bit more crashy/buggy than other betas they’ve released, but promises to be very snazzy indeed once it’s been vacuumed a bit.
Just as I asked – they enabled .ico favicons and a password manager (okay, so maybe it wasn’t specifically me they were listening to).
And I don’t know what changes it but the typefaces look Way smoother. A tad disconcerting: it reminds me how impossible it is to get an objective view of what your web page looks like = from opera 7 all of a sudden Spouting looks like it was designed for the hard-of-sight. It’s probably just the browser’s “font” settings but all the same …
It follows the Windows version as far as decor goes, which is surprising actually — all the other releases Oppy has somehow ended up getting stuck with the clunky Stalinesque Gnome 1.4 widget look.
I’m not really an apple-basher. I just like to poke fun sometimes, but to bring the topic of Safari up again – that little speed test they demonstrate via bar graphics on the download page doesn’t include Opera, and I would say that it’s because Opera is faster. This one shows a noticable positive difference again – which is amazing considering that the web pages aren’t changing – and the fatness of my connection is changing either.
This is the first time they included the mail client with a Linux release. I haven’t really given it a go properly yet. i don’t know how I feel about it all being rolled into one. Probably just a personal preference – wanting to keep the email app. seperate.
There’s an interesting article by one of the O’Reilly clan about community size and how it relates to the virtual world and weblogs. Kinda like the modulisation of a community. Reminds me why I more or less gave up on the conventional forum/bulletin board style sites as places to interact from/with.
