taking the fun out of telly

I got some textbooks for the communication studies subject I’m doing called visual texts. I started to look through them and had to think why I’d picked it again. It was a situation of pick the worst one out of the four and don’t do that. Same with the psychology.
Looking through the contents page i got this familiar feeling of ‘from the contents page things look really good and interesting’. This happens with a lot of non-fiction books i pick up. I’ve read the intro chapter of many-a scripting language manual – php, cgi, xml, xhtml – you name it.
Visual texts seems mainly to be about telly. It’s probably a good enough reason to start scouting around for a super-cheap VCR player. Another good reason for this is that I have an unavoidable commitment on wednesday night and so am missing new simpsons episodes.
I’m doing this one subject off-campus and the other two on. Hopefullly I’ll go okay with the discipline thing, and not accidentally do something zany + off the wall (but unlikely to pass) — like submit crayon drawing of the bungalow and garden.

Movable type are releasing a new version fairly soon.
As Ruby says, I don’t usually go for these things either – but this one tickled my nerdbone.

Which is kind of ironic considering how much I enjoy a good old fashioned apple-bashing ;^).

Dave Thrussell did an invasion of iraq themed special of Rude Future today on 3pbs FM. It left me slumped down for a while after. He does these soundscapes of spoken word things with music in the background. The main chunk of it was some radio documentary which was English but sounded more hardcore than what the BBC would produce. Maybe it was an independent production.
I remember in January of ’91 sitting in my gramma’s lounge room, watching the blitzkreig laser-light show that was the kick-off to the gulf war. And so far, that was the only thing i was really able to recall when thinking about what could or will happen this time. But this radio thing brought back all the other stuff that I’d read or heard about between ’91 and now — all in one hit rather than these little dribs and drabs (like this morning hearing about these australian defense force people who’ve declined being stuck in the arm with goodness knows what experimental toxins (which reminded me of the whole gulf-war syndrome fall out)).
The people of Iraq have never stopped paying for that war. It got to a certain point in the doco and I thought any minute now they’re going to mention depleted uranium ammunition – and they did. Man that stuff’s fucked up.
There’s rallies on everywhere this weekend. I’m going to go.

Can you do the “zany + off the wall” under a different name? That’d be cool

That happens occasionally – just that split second during rebuilding entries or something.

Ah, the quanta returns. Yes – I’d given you up for dead… well maybe not that – but had thought you’d got sick of the blogging. Shall have to stick you back on the list.
