or as that little kitten that’s hanging on only by a claw in the poster is thinking, OH, SHIT! teehee- I love that poster, wish I had one. This is gonna be the week from hell …. well maybe not hell but I sure do have a lot of studying to do, been hammering out an assignment all day …. so what do i do for a break, come here and write some more! hahaha – Last night I thought I was coming down withh something, but maybe it’s just pressure induced hysteria.
Actually i might stick this (communications) assignment up here once it’s done because I’m analysing a discussion thread from Whirlpool. Is due on Mon, then another for Politickss due on Thurs then a psychol draft due the Mon after…. ah well.

Rebuilding the palace

April 3rd, 2002

Perhaps that metaphor is a bit grand. But getting things back the way they were was my excuse for not doing any homework yesterday.
Mostly it hasn’t taken as long as I thought. Just d/loading Mozilla and Opera, and a new version of Eterm (which I couldn’t get to go).
It’s the same as the countless reinstalls on the laptop last year – everything’s being reinstalled from the same disks but each time something comes up a little different. Just little forks in the road along the way.
Like this time I had the memory to put Kde as the default DTE – and this means that I get the Kde login manager as opposed to the Gnome one. Which is good because one of the pesky probs I was having with it all last time was that about every 5th time I’d boot up the system fonts would be messed up and extremely small like ___ – and with Gnome login I’d have to reboot again – Kde has a switch to just clickthe restart X which is way quicker.
For some reason Konqueror was going flakey on me last night – this was at the end of a full day’s use, but that shouldn’t make a difference, and I’d just open it and the scroll bar would flip-out flickering like crazy and basically freeze. (Something different -I installed Gkrellm, and it was showing the CPU go through the roof when that happened.) So far it hasn’t happened this morning, you wouldn’t think it was because of something I installed – that would cause it… Hpoe it doesn’t happen again because my natural inclination would be to d/lo

The Year Zero

April 1st, 2002

I have a pathalogical condition I tells ya! Spare time for me is definitely a bad thing. I accidentally wiped my /home directory and now all my stuff is gone. :^(
For two days I stuffed around with SuSE, wanting to stick it on a spare bit of the hard drive, and discovered that I could do so without messing up the established LILO by just using a boot floppy to boot the secondary os. This seems pretty simple – i don’t know why i didn’t thing of it before.
But alas – I just could get SuSE to look right – messed with the xf86 config for a long time – but it’s just too old to recognise my graphics card.

So, I thought, why not have a muck around with mandrake 8 again. And I did, and did the boot floppy thing again – and all was well — I thought.
I’d had a defunct version of mandrake on hda5 for quite a while – it was what i used to bridge and transfer all my stuff from one RH install to a new one, and I had kept the mandrake/hda5 partition and it was mounting into the home directory.
And this is different to the SuSE mucking round – for that I’d created a new partition – hda10.
So i decide to use the old hda5 to do the new instal of mandrake on to – not thinking that it would be detrimental to the rest of /home.

Ug…. what an expensive mistake to make. All that crap I’d accumulated, all those hours of d/loads. All those settings of things that’ve taken for ever to get just right …. and all those bookmarks.
Probably the worst thing is that because there’s been hassles with the new tpg web space – I hadn’t got the stories or the holiday journal thing or any of theat stuff into a webspace — so now it’s all gone. No, no back ups.

Well, live and learn.
